Q&A: CAVALIER ROLLER LIFTER PROBLEMS (1997) 2.2L??
Question by Serial Stunter RIDE LIKE SIN!!!: CAVALIER ROLLER LIFTER PROBLEMS (1997) 2.2L??
2 cylinder dead. Removed head, everything looks ok except one lifter isn’t moving with engine (just sits there). Also it won’t come out of bore. I can lift it 1/2″ mabey then siezes. What the common problem with these??? Has the roller packed it in? Suggestions on how to get it out? Thanks alot.
Doc….a bent valve? Valves are fine and sealing great. Keep in mind this is a push rod engine (ohv)…lifters are in the block an inch below the piston tdc.
Other guy…all the other lifters come out great it’s not the oil choice….dude. Amsoil full synth. 5 w 40.
Anyone with experience with a 97 2.2L…….PLLLLEEEEEAAASE.

Kinda sounds like you have a bent valve, if I’m understanding you correctly.

Chances are that the lifter is loaded with sludge and varnish to the point that it won’t budge. Buy a can of Amsoil Foaming Cleaner. Spray the thing down, and let it sit a few minutes. IT should come right out. Stop using el cheapo oil in this thing. Use Mobil One, forget about everything else, unless you like spending unnecessary money on valve issues.
I think if it’s not moving at all, the lobe on the camshaft is worn right down, and the bottom of the lifter is mushroomed (larger diameter on the bottom) and therefore won’t fit through the lifter bore
Do not see much of a question here…The Lifter is obviously damaged and you are going to have to remove the cam to get it out …
Chances are that the lifter bore will be abused as well… If you are lucky a machine shop will be able to repair the hole, so that you won’t need a new engine block..
did you give it a compression check before lifting the head off? sounds like a valve sticking , examine the old head gasket ,could be split between cylinders hence no compression, you will need a tool a valve compressor, compress the valve remove the little Collette’s and see if the valve moves , faulty valve guides can cause a valve to stay open , if you cant get the valve out it could be burred at the top. run emery paper round the top of the valve to de burr use a drift and gently tap the valve out ps in the uk our model cavalier is a re badged opel 4 pot still the said principle applys , new guides can be pressed in by your local engine shop do a thorough job on the head whilst it off ie decoke &lap valves in
